Record Antarctic ice gain linked to new tropical climate pathway

A new Nature study reports that Antarctica’s recent ice-mass gain from 2021 to 2023 was driven by an unusual climate pathway linking warm tropical ocean conditions to snowfall over the continent. The research combines satellite gravity observations, ice-core snow records, and atmospheric circulation modeling to show that the gain was likely a temporary anomaly rather than a lasting reversal of long-term ice loss.
